Cancellation of Flagpoling

IRCC has just made the formal announcements regarding the immediate cancellation of flagpoling and the pause of Arranged Employment points for Express Entry in Spring 2025. Here are the details:

IRCC has announced that as of December 24, 2024, work permit and study permit applicants will not be allowed to “flagpole” (going to the port of entry from Canada after making a short visit to the US, St. Pierre, and Miquelon for the purpose of accessing immigration services) unless they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. American citizens or permanent residents
  2. Free-trade agreement professionals and technicians from the United States, Mexico, Chile, Panama, Peru, Colombia, and South Korea
  3. Spouses/common-law partners of professionals and technicians under free-trade agreements with Panama, Colombia, and South Korea
  4. International truck drivers who hold a work permit who were departing for the purposes of employment
  5. Those with a pre-existing appointment booked with the CBSA

This cancellation includes those who have pre-approvals and are going to the port of entry to activate their work permits/study permits.

Pause of Arranged Employment Points in Spring 2025

The government has announced that they will put a temporary pause on Arranged Employment points sometime in “Spring 2025”. This means that those who have additional points because they have LMIAs or other employer-specific work permits may no longer have this advantage to receiving an Invitation to Apply through Express Entry when the temporary pause is in effect.
